Cooking and The Need for Safety Production of Goods
Liberalization, globalization of markets, as well as cooking have been a big boost to businesses. As they seek to conquer major markets and go global too. The competition for the market increases, businesses have been trying to establish the best relationships with their clients. By designing products and services; which are tailor-made for the consumers. As well as those which serve the interest and satisfaction of their clients. This is a positive move; which has benefited many consumers through the provision of high quality products; which are healthy and are also great for reducing pounds. As well as greater value.
However, such changes in the market have not deterred producers from dumping hazardous products to consumers. There is always a balance; which producers have always tried to maintain. Especially those shipping products to poor countries. Perhaps to places where people have limited disposal income. Most producers try to create a relationship between price and quality of a product; as opposed to the safety of production. Or of the products itself.
By drawing such a line between the cost of a product; the producers then go ahead to produce substandard goods. Which in fact may be cheaper. But, are equally hazardous to the community. There is a need for the government to put checks on such goods. Especially on cooking food and drugs. This is because they can pose long term health risks to the citizens. Thus, impact negatively on the productivity of people. Consequently on the economy.
Impact of Unhealthy Products in the Community and to the Economy
However, I hail from a developing country in Africa. And I can attest to the fact that most products sold there are either of poor quality. Or pose high health risks to the consumers. This is due to the fact that many Africans have little resources. It is impossible for them to purchase expensive, quality products. Low bargaining power means that most citizens will go for products; which are inferior and invariably harmful.
It was while I was an intern at the government chemist; that I discovered how producer were trying to sell cheap products. Which were unhealthy to the citizens. At that time, we were investigating an imitation of cooking a food product; that the media had greatly condemned as posing healthy risks to the consumers.
Nevertheless, the findings were positive. They cause much alarm; especially when some chemicals; which were deemed carcinogenic were discovered in the products. As much as the company was made to cease production; as distribution of the product. The government sought legal redress, there was cause of alarm. This is because there was a possibility that some more companies could have been doing the same.
Though there were several government’s set bodies to ensure that such goods were not sold to the public; there seemed to be laxity in the responsible bodies. The reason is because, even the product that we had been investigating had been approved by the government body; responsible for standardization of goods. There was clear indication that the officials of the institution were either compromised; or someone was not doing its works.
Implementing Standards to Protect Consumers from Unhealthy Products
After presentation of the finding; there was need to gather more information about the authorized bodies. As to why all that was happening. A committee was formed to probe the matter, and a vetting process was conducted on top officials from various bodies. There were those who were found guilty of either being compromised and they got fired and others were fired for laxity.
New appointments were made to replace the vacant offices after a strict vetting process and they were mandated to carry out fresh investigation of the various products. The process took several months. The shocking results was that most goods and drugs were either harmful for consumption; or just some generics of original products.
One way to control the conformity of products is through the vigorous product testing regardless of their essential security requirements. Most of the companies were found not to be adhering to the safety standards of production of goods and were heavily penalized.
However, that wasn’t a workable solution. The government found it paramount to intervene by lowering taxation in the production of basic commodities. Along with increasing subsidies in other to make them cheaper; while ensuring that the industries involved didn’t suffer losses in trying to produce safe products.
The government also enacted several legislation; concerning the production and distribution of goods and cooking; which ensured safety standard are met. Since then, there have always been checks to ensure that safe products are being sold and the government ensures that proper follow-ups are made for any goods suspected to breach the set standards.
